Breathing Space
Sometimes we don't need another thing to achieve. We just need a little space to notice.
When I first began offering JingXi Yoga's 30-minute practices, they found their place at the end of the day: A little movement, a little breath and a little stillness. Half an hour in which there was nowhere else to be. I called them Evening Calm. It described when the classes happened, but over time I began to notice that it didn't quite describe what they were because the practice wasn't really about the evening; it was about making space.
It can be easy to imagine that yoga requires us to make room for a full class, find the right time, or commit to a particular kind of practice. Sometimes we have that space and sometimes we don't.
Breathing Space is an invitation to begin with the time that is available. Thirty minutes to move, breathe and notice. That might come after closing the laptop at the end of a working day. It might be a pause between other things. And, as JingXi begins to connect people practising in different parts of the world, one person's evening may be another person's morning.
The time on the clock matters less than the space we make within it.
Breathing Space can be explored through Desk Yoga, Hatha Yoga or Yin Yoga. You don't have to choose one and stay there. On one day, moving away from the desk might be exactly what you need. On another, you might want the gentle movement of Hatha Yoga. At another time, the quieter shapes and longer pauses of Yin may feel more appropriate.
The practice can change because our experience changes. There is no sequence to follow and nowhere you need to begin. Each class is complete in itself.
The first Breathing Space practices explore two landscapes:
Quietening Skies turns the attention towards spaciousness: movement, breath and changing sensations passing through a wider field of awareness.
Settling Waters invites us to notice what happens as movement gradually becomes quieter — not forcing stillness but allowing it to emerge.
They aren't destinations to reach; simply different ways of noticing what is already happening.
Breathing Space is available as individual 30-minute classes, or through the monthly membership, which includes eight classes each month and the freedom to move between Desk, Hatha and Yin practices.
Join live when you can or use the recordings to make space at another time.
But perhaps the simplest description is still the best:
Nothing to achieve.
Nowhere to arrive.
Just a little space to move, breathe and notice.
