A little space changes the movement

We often talk about moving with the breath, but what happens if the breath goes first?

An inhale begins, and there is the slightest sense of expansion. Then an arm rises.

An exhale starts, and something may soften. The body follows.

The difference may be no more than a moment — a little space between the impulse to move and the movement itself. Yet it can change the quality of the practice.

The breath is no longer something we try to match to movement. Instead, movement begins to listen to the breath. Sometimes the breath is long, and the movement has time to unfold. Other times it is shorter.

The movement can be smaller too; nothing needs to be stretched to fit. And perhaps this is one reason a yoga practice does not need to be full. When we leave a little space, we may notice what is already beginning — and allow that to guide what comes next.

The breath moves → The body notices → Movement follows

Space between movements

That little space can appear elsewhere in a practice too.

A breath before the next movement may give us time to notice where the last one left us. There can be space between an instruction and doing it: space to decide not to go as far, space to discover that the body would rather move differently today.

Nothing dramatic has changed, but the movement that follows may feel completely different.

We often think we decide to move, then move, then fit the breath around it. What if we don't need to be quite so quick?

The breath can begin, the body can notice, and the movement can find its own way from there.

Perhaps that is true away from the mat too. A little space doesn't necessarily stop what is happening. Sometimes it changes how we move through it.
